Jean Sforza Dalziel

Artist Statement:
"The focus of my work is to meld abstract composition with objects in reality, landscape or otherwise. This intention allows more creative flexibility and encourages me to infuse a sense of mystery into my work. I hope to engage the viewer and encourage him to explore both the work and his reaction to it."

"In the past I worked completely outdoors on a painting from start to finish, my approach now is different On location I make sketches, usually in pencil, of landscapes that I find interesting. A certain light or combination of shadows and patterns will appeal to me. I also photograph this scene."

"In my studio I work from this material and try to capture the feeling of the scene. On canvas, I use acrylic paint to create luminosity, volume, transparency, and density in an effort to obtain richly woven surfaces. I use a combination of color and energized brushwork to create a sensuous reality of light and space, not matching a color in nature, rather matching its' effect."

"For me, painting is a path to enlightenment through personal vision. In an attempt to preserve painting as a rich medium of discourse, my goal is to communicate and to remain open to individual interpretation ,to allure, to intrigue, to create a sense of beauty and sometimes excitement, to present the familiar in an unfamiliar way."

Jean was raised in Cleveland, began taking classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art ( CIA,) studying with Hodermarsky who encouraged her to continue. Dalziel studied with William Jean, the former Director of continuing education at CIA, before attending OhioUniversity and obtaining her B.F.A. in 1968. Accepted into an art residency at Vermont Studio Center, in Johnson, Vermont in the summer of 1999, where she participated in a workshop taught by Wolf Kahn. More recently Dalziel studied with Chuck Basham who, along with Kahn, is a nationally recognized creative landscape artist.
